1, 8, 15, 22, 29 – Hiking in Helen, every Saturday in October, 1:00PM, Unicoi State Park, 1-800-573-9659 x 300 The hike begins at Unicoi State Park Lodge. This event is in honor of Get Outdoors (GO) Georgia! Join this fun guided hike that travels three miles from the park's lodge to Helen. Shuttle service is provided if hikers want to hike only one way. Pre-registration required.

7 - First Friday Music Pickin’ on the Porch, 6PM – 9PM, Sautee Village. Join us for an evening of great music, food and fun. Local musicians gather and delight the audience with a wide variety of acoustic music. Bring a chair and an appetite. Food is free, however, we gladly accept donations for the Charles Smithgall Humane Society. 706-878-0144

8 – Fall Celebration, Noon – 4:00PM, Smithgall Woods, 706-878-3087. Enjoy the natural beauty of the season with hands-on pioneer skills exhibits, hayrides through the park, traditional craft vendors, mountain music, and apple cider from a hand-cranked press. No registration required. Parking: $6 per vehicle.

14 – Poets Live!, SNCA, 706-878-3300 14-15 – Georgia Literary Festival, SNCA, 770-307-8615. The 13th Annual Georgia Literary Festival will be held at the Sautee-Nacoochee Community Assoc. in Helen. The hours for Friday will be announced. The hours for Saturday will be 10AM – 5PM. The Festival honors Georgia writers from the Northeast Georgia Region. Some of the authors to be honored this year will be John Burrison, Mildred Greear and Lillian Smith.
