Spectacular Anna Ruby Falls lies in the heart of the Chattahoochee National Forest. The quiet coolness of the area is broken only by the thundering rush of water flowing over the rugged cliff face. Anna Ruby Falls marks the junction of Curtis and York Creeks. Both creeks begin on Tray Mountain and are fed by underground springs, rain, and snow. Curtis Creek drops 153 feet and York Creek 50 feet to form the twin waterfalls known as Anna Ruby Falls. From the falls, Smith Creek tumbles downhill to Unicoi Lake and then to the Chattahoochee River. It's journey continues south, eventually joining the Applachicola River in Florida and ending its 550-mile journey in the Gulf of Mexico. A paved 0.4-mile footpath leads from the parking lot to the base of the falls. Walking is easy to moderate and will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Benches are provided along the way. Walking shoes are recommended since the trail can be wet and slippery.

The Lion's Eye Trail gives people who are blind or have visual impairments the opportunity to experience the environment along Smith Creek. Braille signs interpret various features of the area.

Ambitious hikers will find the 4.6-mile Smith Creek Trail a challenge. This longer trail leads from the base of Anna Ruby Falls to Unicoi State Park.

There is a fee of $2.00 per person for Anna Ruby Falls.

The Black Forest Bear Park is located on Main Street in Helen, Georgia. The owners of the park have over 10 years of experience in breeding and keeping these wonderful animals alive. Many of our bears would be destroyed because of no more use in circuses or they are troubled bears, such as raiding campgrounds.

This park educates people about many different species of bears, besides just the black bear, commonly found in the state of Georgia. Some of the species you will observe are, of course, the American Black Bear (Ursus Americanus), Grizzly Bear (Ursus Arctos), Himalayan Bear (Selenarctos), Syrian Brown Bear (Ursus Arctos Syriarcus), and others. At each exhibit there is a map showing where they live and some detailed information about each species. It is educational and fun for the entire family. Not only do you get to see these magnificent animals up close, but you get to feed them as well.

The reptile exhibit, also located on the premises, has numerous types of large snakes for observation. Our North American exhibit shows all the poisonous snakes found in this country along with many larger snakes of the world! Here again all snakes have educational material of where they are found, their size, and much more!

The Frogtown winery is specifically designed to produce high quality wine from Frogtown grapes and, at the same time, to make the most of our rolling terrain. Constructed on a hillside overlooking the vineyards, the Frogtown winery is an underground, tri-level, gravity-flow winemaking facility. Using gravity in place of pumps allows for gentle vinification and treatment of our grape must, juice and wine from start to finish. In addition, the special design of the winery gives us tremendous flexibility in making our wines. We are able to treat every wine grape in an individual manner and develop a style of wines that is uniquely Frogtown. The Three Levels of Frogtown Winery The first and highest level of the Frogtown Winery is the wine grape processing area or the “crush pad,” as we call it. During the fall, as soon as the grapes are harvested, they are brought to this level of the winery and processed in one of two ways. Red grapes are destemmed and the “must,” the resulting grapes, berries and juice, is transferred to stainless steel tanks in the second level of the winery by gravity flow. White grapes are whole cluster pressed and the resulting grape juice is similarly gravity fed into tanks residing below on the second level. The second level of the winery, the tank room, is where fermentation in steel occurs. After fermentation, red wines are racked out of tank, again using gravity flow, into barrels in the third and lowest level of the winery. Depending on the style of white wine being made, some white wines are fermented and briefly aged in barrel, others are kept solely in stainless steel. The third and lowest level of the winery is the barrel room. Being the furthest underground, this level is the coolest, quietest place in which to age our wines. GHAA Art and Fine Crafts is a new Helen art gallery located in the Alpine Villages Shoppes. The gallery is a project of the non-profit Georgia Heritage Arts Association (GHAA) and is a branch of Georgia Heritage Association Center for the Arts (GHCA) which boasts a twelve year tradition of fostering and promoting Georgia artists. Gallery days and hours will be based upon seasonal activity in the area. For present hours check the website http:www.ExperienceGeorgiaArts.org Work currently exhibiting in the gallery provides a range of Georgia’s talented artists as well as the historic progression of art in Georgia. From the heritage art of weaving on the loom and spinning at the wheel to dichotic glass and precious metal clay jewelry, artists have found ways to embrace today’s technologies to create original yet personal expression. Even the impersonal computer has been brought into play to enhance what photographer Celia Durant has found in nature. Potters works also abound in the gallery, each differently interpreting their material, while wearable art artists have many mediums and forms to express their unique designs. Many of the exhibiting artists will be demonstrating during open hours. Peggy Renfro and Lynn Johnson will be weaving and spinning and Linda Lloyd will be metal-smithing, while Ruth Ann Landa paints some of her favorite local critters. Jaymi Hampton will be working precious metal clay into original works of jewelry, or joining Patti Petit to “play” in the clay.

Glass Mountain Gallery was established in 1996 in Robertstown Georgia, one mile north of Helen. From this location artists Phillip and Janine Shelby have produced hand crafted fine art glass which has been sold all over the world. For a limited time each year the Shelbys open their studio and gallery to the public giving glass blowing demonstrations and informative tours of the facilities. When visiting you will see the furnaces operating at 2400 degrees and tour cold shop where cutting, grinding and polishing of art glass takes place. This is a rare opportunity to visit an actual working studio and learn about the process of creating this amazing substance we call glass. The Shelbys' gallery is a renovated general store built in 1930. The solid oak construction is quite unusual and worth a look. As you browse the gallery, Phillip and Janine are happy to share their knowledge of glass as well as many interesting renovation stories.
